Chapter Thirteen

As soon as they’d gotten home Alfie called his lawyer again. They followed his advice to file an official complaint against Sam Chalmers. It was some recourse, but it wasn’t a huge comfort or a guarantee of justice. The mood in the apartment was somber and the evening was tense and uncomfortable.

Maiden closed herself in her room straight after dinner but sleep didn’t come easy. She found it hard to believe that anyone would send Chalmers a death threat and she knew Alfie certainly wouldn’t.

Her thoughts went to Gabby and the brusque meeting she’d observed between her and Chalmers. Although wishing she could have heard what they were talking about, Maiden had to admit that Gabby had left looking smug, not murderous.

Of course, if Chalmers was in business for himself with some sort of extortion racket there might be no shortage of people that wanted him run out of town. It wasn’t a murder attempt, after all, it was a threat. Someone was trying to scare him off not get rid of him for good...hopefully.
